Amazon Gem: Moyobamba, Peru (South America)

Updated: Jul 9, 2024

Welcome to the Peruvian Amazon, baby! Moyobamba, Peru is located within the Amazon of Peru! Get ready to embrace the heat and humidity of the incredible jungle adventure. Moyobamba welcomes you with its thousands of orchid species, making it a perfect starting point for your journey deeper into the Amazon. This unique and biodiverse ecosystem is fresh and immersive! Get ready.

Recommended amount of time: 2-3 days

  1. Place of stay

  • Muyuterra Hospedaje: 7/10 - With not so many options in this city, this place is clean, small, and very safe! The beds were comfortable, but our room was quite tiny with minimal space for anything other than simply resting and showering. The breakfast was basic, leaving us questioning how anyone could feel satisfied after such a small meal. Additional items were available but at an extra cost.

2. Activities

Pro-Tip: Everything in town is pretty close by, and taking a tuk-tuk on your own is affordable! I recommended exploring independently since guided tours can be pricey and not worth it due to the proximity of everything. Activities in Moyobamba and Tarapoto are similar, so focus on local attractions in Moyobamba and save other activities for Tarapoto.

  • Baños Termales De San Mateo: These varying temperature thermal baths offer a local dive into the community vibes. With a flowing river through the park, it creates a tranquil atmosphere with artisanal shops, ice cream stands, and small food vendors- don't miss trying the PISCOCO!

  • Qrquidario Wakanki: Located just 300 meters from Baños Termales, this spot offers a scenic 3-20 minute guided walk through a beautiful garden featuring hundreds of flower and tree species. We even saw a rainbow hummingbird!

  • Vivero Orquideas Amazónicas: A smaller and more centrally located garden with a stunning view of the river and atmosphere. The cafe inside serves excellent coffee, but I recommend Wakanki for a more visually appealing garden.

  • Chocolate Museum: Pop by to sample some local chocolates, especially flavors like golden berries and aji - delightful!

  • Puerto Tahuishco: Make your way down to the port for a leisurely stroll to the river.

    • Safe the longer boat rides for deeper and more remote parts of the Amazon to avoid repetition

  • Cataratas de Paccha: Stunning waterfalls renowned in Moyobamba. If time permits, don't miss this natural wonder

3. Food

  • Marona Restaurante: The one and only spot I ate at. Pretty solid menu with a wide variety. The Coronas were the cheapest I had ever seen jaja!

4. Transportation

  • Turismo Selva: Colectivos (also known as shared taxis) run throughout the day. You can simply arrive at any time to find a van going to your desired location. Don't worry, most likely within the second of pulling up, drivers will badger you and ask you where you are going to direct you to the van awaiting people. Once the van is filled, you pay and depart immediately. This option is significantly cheaper and faster than taking a bus. Plus, riding with the locals adds a fun and authentic touch to your journey!

Enjoy the heat of the moment, literally ;)

Next stop: Tarapoto via Colectivo (Turismo Selva)

Xoxo,

Chelsey
