Updated: Oct 4, 2024

There's an abundance of wonders to discover in this city and this is truly the ultimate travel guide for Ushuaia, Argentina. The views are absolutely breathtaking from every vantage point. I spent an incredible three weeks here, immersing myself in the city's charm—a true port city. Ushuaia is renowned for its king crab and other seafood delicacies, as well as its connection to Tierra del Fuego, Charles Darwin, marine life, and numerous hiking opportunities.

Recommended amount of time: 4-6 days (depending on the season)

    1. Hiking

    2. Nightlife

  3. Restaurants x Cafes

  4. Other pointers

    1. Western Union, local must try's

  1. Place of stay

    1. Anúm Hostel: A charming family-owned hostel new to the scene, with a serene environment and a dedicated meditation room atop. The bathrooms are impeccably clean, and the bedrooms offer curtains for privacy. Each morning, a breakfast awaited, and on occasion, they treated guests to delightful asado BBQs!

2. Activities

  • Baqueanos de Tierra Del Fuego: This company offers an exceptional experience with their "Día de Estancia" package. From 4x4 rides on the water to horseback rides through the forest and indulge in a traditional asado with house wine, every moment is steeped in local culture and breathtaking views.

  • Beagle Channel Tour: Despite my usual dislike of typical tourist attractions, this tour with Rumbo Sur surpassed expectations. Cruising along the Beagle Channel, with stops at Isla De Los Lobos, Islas Bridges, and Faro Les Eclariues, provided me with unforgettable encounters with sea lions, stunning landscapes, and a deeper connection to the region.

  • Cerro Castor: Perfect for winter visits, Cerro Castor offers exhilarating skiing experiences. Renting gear from Vertical, I really enjoyed the shredding on the slopes.

  • Museo Marítimo y del Presidio de Ushuaia: A captivating museum housed in a former prison, offering insights into the lives of prisoners and the region's maritime history.

  • Arakur Hotel Spa: Treat yourself to a half-day pass at this luxurious spa, featuring massages, saunas, and indoor/outdoor hot tubs with breathtaking city views—a perfect retreat after days of hiking.

  • Tierra Del Fuego: Explore the national park, taking in the stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife. Consider taking the train during snowy conditions or summertime vibes.

  • Casa de la Mujer: A serene spot overlooking the port, perfect for quiet reflection, picnics, or meditation amidst stunning views.

  • Walk the waterfront/Ushuaia sign: Experience the beauty of Ushuaia's waterfront, particularly enchanting during sunset.

a. Hiking

The majority of the hikes should not be completed alone. You can get a guide with this lovely company or go with people from the hostel!

  • Vincinguerra Glacier: A full-day hike offering awe-inspiring views of a profound glacier.

  • Laguna 5 Hermanos: A challenging full-day hike with panoramic views of the city and majestic mountains.

  • Glacier Martial: A hike that can be completed alone with breathtaking views, though time restricted me from going to the top.

  • Ojo Del Albino: Recommended by local guides for its stunning views, but extremely demanding.

  • Trekking + Packingrafting Cruce de Cordillera: An unforgettable experience with an unforgettable tour company, combining hiking with paddling across Lake Escondido, with breathtaking views of the Andes mountains.

  • Bike to Playa Larga: Enjoy a leisurely bike ride to Playa Larga, extending the journey to explore the scenic coastline. b. Night Life

  • Dublin Bar: local Irish-inspired pub

  • Viagro: a bar offering a variety of music on different nights

  • Living Ushuaia: EDM discoteca from local DJs

3. Restaurants x Cafes

Restaurants:

  • Ramos Generalres: MUSEUM X RESTOBAR. A local historic gem! Enjoy a complimentary tour alongside delicious Argentinean cuisine.

  • El Mercado: A fantastic spot offering a variety of culinary delights. While it's more of a restaurant than a traditional market, you can opt to dine in or grab some takeout.

  • Dona Lupita: Home to the best empanadas in Ushuaia! A local favorite that never disappoints.

  • El Viejo Marino: An incredible seafood restaurant that won't break the bank! Arrive early to beat the crowds—trust me, the delicious food is worth the wait!

Cafes:

  • Tanta Sara: They have several locations across the city, but I particularly favored the cozy ambiance of the one I tagged. This café is a must-visit for indulging in medialunas and other Argentine pastries, all lovingly handmade on-site!

  • Ana y Juana: My top pick for a café experience. While they have two locations on San Martin, I preferred this particular spot. It's a quaint coffee house offering excellent pastries. I found it better to work here compared to Tanta Sara, as it tends to be less crowded.

  • Xpresso: A spacious café with a scenic view, perfect for getting work done in a relaxed atmosphere.

  • Augusto Ushuaia: An upscale café renowned for its exquisite croissants and exceptional coffee.

4. Other pointers

Next stop: Puerto Natales via bus with a transfer in Punta Arenas.

  • Recommendation: Don't pre-buy the ticket from Punta Arenas to Puerto Natales. When you arrive, hop on the next bus out as they are going ALL day and are at the same small bus station!

Xoxo,

Chelsey
