Travel Guide for Chachapoyas, Peru: Gocta Waterfalls (South America)

Updated: Aug 9, 2024

Home to the 3rd largest waterfall in the world and the most famous in Peru, Gocta Falls! This is the main attraction of the town which means visiting here calls for the hike to the falls! This travel guide for Chachapoyas, Peru highlights the iconic Gocta Waterfalls hike!

  1. Place of stay

  • La Casa del Turista: 8.5/10 - Stayed here on my first night and it was okay. They charged 30 sol for early check-in, which felt excessive. The bed was comfortable, and the location was good, but the hostel's noise and bright lights woke us up early. They did offer a solid breakfast, hot water, access to a kitchen, and wifi.

  • La Casa de Los Balcones: 9/10 - Stayed here on my second night and preferred it to the first. Both are centrally located, but this one is right around the corner from the main plaza. They also provide breakfast, a really comfy bed, good wifi, and a smart TV.

2. Gocta Waterfalls Information:

  • Gocta Waterfall: At 771 meters tall, this perennial waterfall amidst the mountains is breathtaking. The hike is moderately demanding, taking about 3 to 4 hours in total. As you head into the Amazon, it's a great starting point, offering a combination of the Amazon and stunning mountains. The weather is not too hot, given its proximity to the Amazon.

    • After the hike, be sure to stop by Cocachimba Vintage, a liquor shop in the main square. The owner makes his own liquor by fermenting local fruits and liquor together for months. He even let me make my own pisco sour for free!

3. Restaurants x Cafes

  • Hotel Dordean Casona Boutique:  Had dinner here on my last night! It's located in a boutique hotel, but the prices are reasonable. I enjoyed a burger with an incredibly moist and delicious chocolate cake. They also offer a mini local drink upon seating. The ambiance is clean and boutique-like.

  • CHACHA Cafe: I frequented this cafe multiple times to get work done. It's a spacious cafe with sunlight streaming in through the glass ceiling. The menu is extensive, though a bit on the pricey side. However, a cappuccino can go a long way! The wifi never failed me here.

Grocery store and cheap ice cream in one:

  • Mini Market: This is the largest grocery store in the city, located on the main plaza. There's also an amazing and CHEAP ice cream shop in front. It's a great spot to pick up a few things and indulge in some ice cream for just 1.50 SOL a scoop (about 50 cents)!

From here, I started my pilgrimage into the Peruvian Amazon, making a ton of stops on the way.

Next stop: Moyobamba via night bus

Xoxo,

Chelsey
