Travel Guide for El Calafate, Argentina (South America)

Updated: Oct 4, 2024

Home to the spectacular and massive Perito Moreno Glacier! El Calafate, Argentina is a cozy town and this travel guide offers day the best trip to the glacier, breathtaking views of the lake, and traditional Argentine asado paired with fine wines.

Nearby lies the charming and renowned El Chalten, the spot for unforgettable hiking adventures through stunning peaks. FYI: The logo of the brand Patagonia is from the mountain Fitz Roy in El Chalten!

Recommended time of stay: 2-3 days

  1. Place of Stay

    1. Hostal Schilling: A home away from home rated 10/10 for its tranquility, spaciousness, and the home-cooked buffet breakfast surpassing all others I've had in Argentine hostels. Impeccably clean with a helpful staff, though it's worth noting this isn't the most social hostel. Perfect for those seeking a peaceful retreat close to the town center. Hostal Schilling also arranges tours; ask for Ramiro, who also provided invaluable assistance and visa extension tips.

2. Activities

  • Mini-trekking: This tour is a must-do, with only one company offering the glacier walks. Experience walking on the Perito Moreno Glacier, including a boat ride to access the glacier itself. Enjoy whiskey on the (glacier) rocks and local chocolates amidst the stunning glacial landscape, with the option to quench your thirst with freshly melted glacier water. If you're considering any activity in El Calafate, this is it. The tours will be significantly cheaper during low season (August - November)

  • Bike to the beach: Rent from BAFT TRAVEL AGENCIA and pedal out to the beach, stopping by the iconic El Calafate sign. Experience the crystalline blue waters and reconnect with nature.

  • Artisanal Market: Explore the charming shops along the side streets and main thoroughfare, showcasing handmade crafts that blend the ancient artistry of El Calafate with contemporary creativity.

3. Restaurants x Cafe x Beer

El mejor restaurant:

  • Mi Viejo: A superb asado spot, renowned as one of the town's best. Don't miss trying their house wine alongside the flavorful grilled meats.

Cafes:

  • Pantagonia: A cozy cafe offering homemade pastries, bread, and coffee.

  • Elba’r: A great spot for coffee, pastries, sandwiches, and free Wi-Fi.

  • Acuarela: Indulge in artisanal ice cream and other local treats.

Beer:

  • La Zorra Taproom: Sample artisanal beers on tap; one cup might lead to three!

  • Cerveza Patagonia: Enjoy a drink here after a day of biking or any time—the beer is exceptional. Don't hesitate to ask for samples of their various brews on tap.

Grocery Store:

4. General Tips:

  • Visit during the off-season for lower prices (September is ideal). Consider bringing enough cash, especially during peak season because the Western Union is tricky. Be prepared to hand in a colored copy of your passport at the Western Union.

  • El Chalten: Buses go every day, multiple times a day to El Chalten. Options of hiring private transportation is possible but going with the local bus is much more practical for the wallet.

Visit the El Chalten guide for tips!

Songs of El Calafate:

  1. Retro Heaven Forest: Indie Elephant

2. If I Ain’t Got You: Alicia Keys

After visiting El Chalten and returning back to El Calafate, I took a night bus to Ushuaia with a transfer in Rio Gallegos! Ticket bought in person at the El Calafate bus station.

Xoxo,

Chelsey
