The Best Way to Travel in El Chalten, Argentina (South America)

Updated: Oct 4, 2024

In a small quiet town with a single main road leading to all its attractions, El Chalten beholds some of the most iconic hiking experiences in Argentina, if not all of South America. The crown jewel, Fitz Roy, captivates visitors with its various viewpoints and hiking trails, each offering unique perspectives and levels of challenge. Below is the best travel guide for a few days in El Chalten, Argentina.

Getting to El Chalten is simple; a 3-hour bus from El Calafate.

Recommended time of stay: 3-4 days

  1. Place of Stay

    1. Rancho Grande Hostel and Restaurant (Open 24 hours): This establishment exceeded expectations! A hub for hikers from all corners of the globe, it offers clean rooms and bathrooms with excellent shower pressure. Situated conveniently close to the town's best pubs and restaurants, I found myself dining at the hostel restaurant throughout my four-day stay—generous portions of delicious meals with a discount for guests. Plus, next to the hostel is a lively pub where guests receive additional discounts.

2. Restaurants

  • Rancho Grande Hostel: A convenient choice for hearty meals when you're too weary from hiking. Alternatively, the attached beer pub next door offers additional dining options.

  • La Zorra Taproom: Indulge in great beer and food just across the street from Rancho Grande.

  • Parilla La Oveja Negra: Renowned as the top spot in town for traditional Argentine asado, offering a classic and fulfilling dining experience.

3. Activities

  • Fitz Roy: Embarking early at 6:45 am for my first real hike in my entire life, I was rewarded with an unforgettable experience. With a total of 24 KM, the kike is rather moderate except for the last kilometer, where the steepness inclines the most. Be sure to pack plenty of snacks for the journey!

  • Laguna Torre: This hike offered stunning scenery without the extreme exertion of Fitz Roy. Though it consumed most of the day, the hike was less strenuous and incredibly beautiful. Don't forget to pack snacks for the top!

  • Chorrillo Del Salto: A delightful "off-day" excursion to a tranquil waterfall, perfect for unwinding in nature's beauty. The hike is leisurely, mostly flat, and provides spots to relax on the rocks by the falls.

4. Tips

  • During winter visits, renting poles and crampons is a must.

  • Hikes: Use Alltrails for solo exploration

    • Note: None of these hikes require an entrance fee or guide.

Next stop: Returning back on a day bus to El Calafate (bought 1-2 days in advance of leaving El Chalten at the El Chalten bus station)

Xoxo,

Chelsey
