Travel Guide for San Carlos de Bariloche, Argentina (South America)

Updated: Oct 4, 2024

Nestled amidst a breathtaking landscape, this city is surrounded by Lake Río Negro that embraces the mountains as if they were inseparable. Bariloche is a treasure chest of delights, with chocolate factories, artisanal markets, scenic hikes, and a magnificent mountain perfect for skiing on snowy days. With stunning landscapes at every turn, this city captivates visitors with its natural beauty and charm.

Regardless of the season, this travel guide for Bariloche, Argentina offers an abundance of experiences. Whether you're shredding on the incredible slopes of Cerro Catedral, exploring scenic hiking trails around the lake, or simply savoring a cup of coffee at one of its charming cafes, Bariloche has something to offer for everyone, meeting you wherever you are in your journey.

Recommended amount of time: 3-4 days

  1. Places of stay

    1. Tangoinn Hostel: I wouldn't recommend staying here! The kitchen is basic and lacks sufficient utensils for cooking, making it unsuitable for those who wish to prepare their own meals. Additionally, the "spa" is simply a room with a hot tub and comes with an extra cost. However, despite these drawbacks, the morning staff is ready to prepare breakfast for you, which typically includes a variety of options such as crepes, eggs, and always pastries served with butter, jam, and coffee. The location is conveniently just a few minutes walk from the main road, and the rooms don't feel overcrowded, offering some personal space.

    2. Recommended hostel: Vintage Hostel Boutique

2. Restaurants x Cafes

Restaurants

  • Huang Ji Xhong: Even in Argentina, cravings for other cuisines strike, and Huang Ji Xhong is the perfect answer. This Chinese gem offers authentic Chinese dishes at very affordable prices. I particularly loved their appetizer dumplings, which, although typically served only at lunch, they kindly brought out for us upon request.

Cafes

  • Rapanui Cafe: A multifaceted heaven, Rapa Nui Cafe seamlessly combines the charm of a cafe, restaurant, ice cream parlor, fast food joint, chocolate shop, and even an ice skating rink! A must-visit destination, even if just to soak in the ambiance. And trust me, the ice cream here is beyond compare!

  • Museo del Chocolate Havanna: Tucked away overlooking the river, this cozy spot offers not just coffee and food but also an array of chocolates. For an added treat, indulge in a tour of the factory for a deeper dive into the world of chocolate craftsmanship.

3. Activities

  • Cerro Cathedral: As an avid skier, I've been on many slopes, but Cerro Cathedral stands out as one of the finest. With the convenience of renting top-notch Burton equipment right on the mountain, skiing here was a dream come true. And the ski pass, priced relatively cheap for a day was a steal. The panoramic view from the summit moved me to tears; it's a sight that truly leaves an impression.

    • Getting to Cerro Cathedral: Catching the bus to Cerro Cathedral can be a bit crowded, but fear not. Simply inquire about the bus number, and you'll be on your way. Give yourself extra time to wait in line for the bus. For a smoother experience, consider taking a taxi ride with a group of people.

  • Llao Llao: This scenic hike offers breathtaking views and the chance to cap it off with a visit at the end to the Cerveza Patagonia Factory, where the bus stop is to take you back into town. Don't forget to explore the various trails along the way, extending the hike beyond the estimated time of 2 hours and 45 minutes on Google Maps. Trust me, the extra time spent in nature is well worth it, especially with a cold Patagonia beer waiting at the end.

  • Feria de Artesanos y Emprendedores: Explore the charming artisanal markets near the main road, where you'll find an array of handmade crafts unique to Bariloche. From quirky winter hats to personalized additions, there's something for everyone here, all at wallet-friendly prices.

  • El Reino de los Chocolates: Translated into English as "The Chocolate Kingdom," this was one of the most stunning chocolate shops I've ever laid eyes on! You don't need to make a purchase to enjoy browsing through the store. Located right on Mitre Street, the main one of Bariloche, it's a must-visit spot. I highly recommend strolling up and down this street and popping into nearly every store you encounter—it's all incredibly charming!

Next stop: El Calafate via bus (~32 hours) with a transfer in Rio Gallegos! Ticket was bought in person at the bus station in Bariloche.

Xoxo,

Chelsey
